A taste of Tenerife

Michelin-starred restaurants, local wines and taster menus at bargain prices – in recent years, Tenerife has sailed up the charts as a leading destination for foodies in the Canaries.

Basil, thyme and lavender scents the air. The orchards are heaving with bananas, mangoes, papayas – and plenty of other exotic fruits we’ve never heard of.

- We want to show a part of the Canary Islands that most tourists are not allowed to see, but which is important to us and the island's history, says Leticia Dorta. She has taken us on a tour of the La Granja Verde farm (the green farm) in La Orotava, set on the outskirts of the tourist resort of Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife.

A couple of years ago, this old banana plantation was converted into a modern organic farm, with lush Photo: Annika Goldhammerfruit orchards, vegetable fields and livestock pens. They grow around 150 different crops here and also take care of several endangered animal species.

There are also two restaurants, one of which, Dula y Pipa, proves to be the best value-for-money gourmet restaurant on Tenerife. We order a taster menu with seven fine dishes, based on produce from the farm here, for around €39.

“We aim to serve classic Canarian food with a modern twist. We also want the distance from field to fork to be as short as possible,” says chef Juan Carlos Clemente, serving a chlorophyll-thin cabbage soup with 63°C eggs.

The soup is garnished with a purple, edible flower from the garden and the dish is served with Islas, a chilled wine made from local Forastera Blanca grapes. It’s a delicious combination.

Dula y Pipa is just one of the many reasons why Tenerife has become the destination of choice for food and wine lovers coming to the Canaries. There are numerous restaurants here that make the island an irresistible travel destination for visitors wanting to combine a beach holiday with a high class food experience.
